AUSTRALIAN brain surgeon Charlie Teo is one of 16 world experts who have accused a global newspaper of publishing "technical errors and misleading statements" in an article that rubbished the idea mobile phones cause cancer.

In an open letter, the experts, who work in Europe, the US and Australia and have qualifications in fields such as cancer medicine, public health, statistics and electromagnetism, said the article published in The Economist "fails to provide critical information about this important public health challenge", and demanded that the journal print a correction.

The experts wrote that history was "replete with failures to control highly profitable carcinogenic substances, ranging from tobacco to asbestos, until proof of harm became irrefutable", and suggested on a conservative analysis that mobile phones and other wireless radiation might be seeding 250,000 avoidable brain tumours every year.

One year ago, Jo Egelhoff wrote at FoxPolitics.net, “FrankLasee in the 1st Senate District. I’ve been a long-time fan of Frank’snever-changing and well-informed conservative principles and views. A biteccentric once in a while, but this guy is a fighter. For your constitutionalrights and for mine.”

The senator (R-De Pere) is certainly living up to her praise now as he tackles the issue of the health effects of wind turbines for hisconstituents, who live near the noisy, whirling machines. He has called for amoratorium on wind turbines (LRB-2355/4) until more research can be done. One has to applaudhim for sticking out his neck for public health in an age where technology seemsto rule our lives with no recourse for individuals.

Citizens surely have the right to safety in their own homes, andtechnologies that make them have to flee should not be tolerated. Even if yousupport alternative energy sources, machines or devices that harm residents arenot the answer. Enough evidence and studies show how the constant humming andthe shadow patterns from wind turbines can cause biological disruption tohumans to not merely dismiss it. The turbines have also been shown to generate unhealthy dirty electricity and ground currents. (Here and here are a couple sources on this.) Therefore, it is heartening to have Senator Lasee try to get to the bottom of theissue, rather than resort to Wikipedia or industry-biased information (pretty much the same thing.)

Of course, liberals might say a Republican going after analternative energy source is nothing new. But the truth is their frenzied rush toincorporate sustainable energy solutions in order to try to stop supposed manmade climate change has too often led to slip-shod solutions that can harm people’s lives – in the here and now. Just look at CFL light bulbs withtoxic mercury inside that need hazmat disposal if the bulbs break. And look atAMR microwave transmitting utility meters that consumers nationwide areprotesting for cost, privacy and health reasons. Situating wind turbines where they can affect residences is a prime example of diving in before looking at what lies below.

Senator Lasee is interested in obtaining more researchand information to ensure the SAFE deployment of wind technology in Wisconsin (if that is possible.) Hiseven-tempered approach makes him someone people can trust. Kudos to the senatorfor working for listening to citizens, and not shying away from a controversial issue. AsEgelhoff said, he can be “a bit eccentric" sometimes - read independent thinker - and a consistentfighter for our rights.

Frank Lasee would also be a shining torch to replace Senator Herb Kohl –who has always claimed he is working for the people, unless it involves countering big technology or telecominterests. Please consider giving Lasee your vote for U.S. Senator when thetime comes – if you want someone to truly go to bat for your rights on CapitolHill.

Fiber Optic Safer than Wireless Broadband for Rural Wisconsin

Here is my private citizen response to the gung-ho column of big technology fellow Tom Still, who lists the reasons to deploy rural Broadband, as posted at Real Debate Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Technology Council website.

Wired, fiber optic broadband across the state would be great, all benefit with no risks or problems. Consumer Reports has repeatedly rated speed-of-light fiber optic services as preferable to nonfiber services, while other reports show wireless a better choice. But incorporating microwave-transmitting wireless broadband poses risks and problems that are not getting press attention due to the unconditional love affair with the technology fueled by out-dated, lax FCC and FDA standards influenced by inherent corruption.

Like it or not, some consumers are getting sick when exposed to various wireless emissions, even at low (chronic) levels. Many were fine until reaching a threshold, such as when transmitting "smart meters" went into their neighborhood, or when they discovered using a cell phone created headaches on the phone side of the head. You can make fun of it unless it happens to you or your loved one. Wireless emissions can also cause medical implant malfunction, and other health risks to the general consumer. (See also Janet Newton letter below.)

Therefore, imposing longer-range wireless broadband signals upon the whole rural population is a bad idea, especially for the percentage of the population that cannot tolerate the new chronic radiation exposures. I know I pretty much stand alone on this in many circles. But this point of view needs to be aired: people deserve to know the full impact of proliferating new technologies.

I am a conservative and I am pro-business. But wireless microwave radiation emissions can infiltrate people’s homes even if they do not choose to use the associated devices or services. It's like second-hand smoke, only worse, because it goes through walls. This now steps over the bounds of business rights, and becomes an individual human rights issue, a property rights issue and a constitutional issue.

Expanding wireless broadband is bound to create suffering and health risks alongside any perceived benefits. The question becomes are some people's lives and well-being expendable for the "greater good?" Is that good actually greater? And should an industry and those who benefit from it be able to trample the rights and basic needs of others?

Again, the obvious solution is to only deploy fiber optic broadband, and give concerned consumers power over their home environments and health. Fiber optic systems would deliver the goods consumers crave without hurting anyone.

YOU CAN'T TAKE THE SKY FROM ME: in solidarity with UW-Stout Professor James Miller

I'm posting this in solidarity with Professor James Miller at University of Wisconsin-Stout for having his poster of Firefly character Mal removed from his door by the administration. They said, "it is unacceptable to have postings such as this that refer to killing." But they are happy to kill free speech and thought.

This was not a literal threat from the professor, but a sci fi show quote showing fairness in a fight. (duh) When another character asks how Mal could be trusted to not kill him in his sleep, lead character Malcolm, "Mal" Reynolds responded,
You don't know me, son, so let me explain this to you once, if I ever kill you, you'll be awake. You'll be facing me. And you'll be armed.

Miller responded to the harrassment of his free speech by tacking up another expressively graphic poster that read "Fascism can cause blunt head trauma and/or violent death. Keep fascism away from children and pets." Which they also forcibly removed. Apparently the administration wants no discussion or debate about what fascism is, has been or could be, or what makes for a fair fight. They would rather snuff any provocative expression.

Should the Wisconsin Public Utility Institute Ban Public Input?

The Wisconsin Public Utility Institute (WPUI) supposedly incorporates the “Wisconsin Idea,” meant to foster outreach, forums and open debate on utility policy to benefit the citizens and the state. Their recently cancelled Transmitting "Smart Meter" Utility Roundtable, scheduled September 27 in Green Bay, violated that mission.

Citizen inquiries about the event, suggesting a desire to attend and join the discussion, led to clarification that, while citizens could attend (for a $125 fee), they could not participate. Chatham House Rules were also instituted after that first inquiry, so it was against conference rules for attending utility officials to be held accountable for statements they made. Roundtable content could only be discussed in abstract terms. Journalists were not invited. It seems that when it became clear that there would be some coverage, due to a public protest planned for outside the event, the conference was cancelled, though unspecified "financial" reasons were given.

WPUI Director Cara Lee Mahany Braithwait told me in an email that Chatham House Rule was common during institute meetings, but none of the other events in their archives mentioned using the rule, or the overt exclusion of public input. So, why expend such great effort to control the information at the Smart Meter Roundtable? And is this a proper use of WPUI resources?

Maybe WPUI is trying to protect the utilities from having to acknowledge the growing reports nationwide of harm from wireless smart meters emissions. Perhaps the institute wants to hide the fact that wireless transmissions pose a threat to national and personal security, since data is easy for knowledgeable hackers to obtain, or even shut down large segments of the electrical grid. But customers have a right to learn about these undisclosed risks and voice their demands to opt out.(See Electrical Pollution or Stop Smart Meters sites.)

Consumers also have the right to know that, contrary to utility claims, transmitting smart meters are shown to be out of compliance with the FCC, and that some smart meters measured were giving off more radiation than a cell phone TOWER.

Instead of trying to censor this information and the citizens' voices the WPUI ought to welcome dialog. In fact, they should schedule a public forum where citizens can question utility reps, and be heard.

In the meantime, public participation at the upcoming WPUI Energy Utility Basics 2011 – where smart meters will be a topic – will be curtailed by expense and prohibition of discussion during the “training” sessions. Concerned Wisconsin citizens are invited to protest outside the conference during the smart meter segments October 24-28, 2011. Details will follow later.

Why doesn't the U.S. stand up for human rights in China?

I realize our relationship with China is complex, based on trading and their growing ownership of assets in the United States. But detaining and harming people for attempting to protest unfair treatment by the government when VP Joe Biden was there is horrible. How did our country - the supposed defender of free speech and human rights - respond to this incident?

The U.S. Embassy in Beijing declined to comment.

To accept another country's maltreatment of its own people, without even a comment, is immoral. To continue to deal with governments that do this as if nothing happened means our own government is willing to accept such behavior. Which does not bode well for the American people.

Smart Meter Protest Planned Outside Wisconsin Utilities Roundtable

The Wisconsin Public Utility Institute (WPUI) of the University of Wisconsin has planned an “Advanced Metering Utility Roundtable” for September 27, 2011 in Green Bay. The meeting will “allow utilities in the state to take a moment and see where we are in this new world that is unfolding at a sometimes dizzying speed” – the new world of smart meters and the Smart Grid.

The public may pay the $125 non-member fee to attend, but they may not ask questions or give any input during the discussion. The press has not been invited, and no one present may reveal the identities or affiliations of any participants under the WPUI’s Chatham House Rule set-up.

While these restrictive measures may help utility officials focus and talk freely, they cut out the participation of people most affected by utility changes: energy consumers. Many Wisconsinites have not been paying much attention to the mass deployment of so-called smart meters, and how it affects them. So, how about taking a moment to see where WE are in this new world thrust upon us?

Consider these areas where 'smart' meters will impact our lives:

Our Families' Health: Smart meters emit bursts and pulses of radiofrequency radiation, which can exceed cell phone TOWER levels as it cuts through walls and people's bodies on the way to the remote readers. The World Health Organization (WHO)recently classified radiofrequency exposure from cell phones as a Class 2B potential carcinogen. Furthermore, growing number of citizens are reporting ill effects relating to the meters. Thousands of studies show biological harm and effects, which are ignored by the utilities and governmental authorities, who are willing to play Russian Roulette with the public's health.

Our Privacy: Data about our energy use being remotely collected can be sold or shared with third parties, or used by hackers and terrorists. The Wisconsin Roundtable will discuss who owns our data, and who is responsible for keeping it secure, since they are already collecting it.

Our Pocketbooks: According to a Wall Street Journal article, smart meters are expensive, and will require extra fees to pay for them. They will only allow savings for customers willing or able to play the real-time game of checking how much energy is being used moment to moment, so they can choose the cheapest time to do their laundry or dishes, etc. And soon the utilities will mount a massive P/R campaign to "sell" their smart meter game, trying everything, even cute stickers to get consumers to comply.

Our Safety: Smart meters make it easier for utilities to(remotely) terminate service. Consumer advocates are concerned that this will allow utilities to disconnect power for small arrearages that wouldn't have caused a termination in the past. The remote "OFF" switches are also vulnerable to hackers or terrorists, who would want to play havoc with the system.

Our environment: No environmental impact study has been done on the potential effects on nature and wildlife of new, chronic exposure to ambient microwave radiation, which smart meters widely spread. It appears the only "green" thing the smart meters do well is line the pockets of the utilities.

A Wall Street Journal article summarized the smart meter program, laying out the basic pros and cons of the technology. But the biggest CON here is the way smart meters are being forced upon consumers without our consent. Even a doctor's or legislator's request for a person to opt out for health reasons is blatantly ignored by state utilities, including WE Energy, Xcel Energy, Alliant Energy and Wisconsin Public Service.

Anti-smart meter resistance involves a mix of people, speaking out for people’s property rights, privacy and safety in California, Maine, Texas and elsewhere.

A peaceful Wisconsin protest is planned outside the September 27 utility roundtable. Come if you think the utilities should answer to consumers, and scrap their DUMB transmitting meter plans.

EPA crackdown on coal plants should wait

The White House maintains direct control over the EPA, and its enforcements are subject to the political agenda of who is in power.

Therefore, the White House could roll back the current EPA crackdown on coal plants during this devastating economy. Who can afford to pay more so Wisconsin can purchase energy to sell us, rather than continue to use the energy our coal plants produce for the time being?

But marching in step with the leftist administration, the EPA is pushing towards "environmental justice," oblivious to the pain of rolling blackouts and higher energy costs for Americans. Of course, higher costs are going to hurt low income consumers most, and justify more government support for energy - just another way to get people hooked on handouts, and redistribute the nation's resources.

This aggressive alternative energy push is also based on the belief in global warming/climate change, which by now, most people understand is politically motivated. Alternative energy is a good thing, but not when forced down consumers' throats when they have already had to swallow major financial losses, and the economic situation is sinking fast.

Furthermore, Wisconsin utilites are already committed to making consumers use expensive alternative energy sources. In other words, the state is already on that track. This EPA mandate is unfair to a state that is already dancing the dance.

Petri, Kohl, Leibham, Kestell Ignore Risks of Wireless Telecommunications

Rep. Petri, Senator Kohl, Senator Leibham and Rep. Kestell all share the same enthusiasm for the wireless explosion in the state, along with the same blindspots on the issue.

I blogged earlier about the FCC move to shift support away from landlines. In a recent response to my letter concerning this issue, Rep. Tom Petri wrote, "the rumor you heard about ending the use of landline telephones is false." Then he went on to say, "As part of the proposed rule the plan involves reorienting the goals and workings of the USF to expand broadband service rather than landline telephone service. The proposed rule also states that the reason for the shift would be because voice-only service is currently inadequate for the country's communication need."

There's a disconnect here that needs to be addressed: The result of the new policy will be that landlines will not be given the financial support to properly maintain and expand them. Besides, consumers who do not want to use wireless phones might not have a choice because of this re-directing of the resources, and language that allows phone companies/telecom companies to offer whatever kind of service THEY want to. Thus, there will no longer be UNIVERSAL landline service.

Petri's and the FCC's tricky justification of the new policy is deplorable. For more details about the true impact, see this letter from the EMR Policy Institute.

Then, Senator Herb Kohl wants to expand mobile phone coverage by blocking mergers of telecom companies and allow for more competition. He said in a recent update, No one wants to see cell phone prices increase or consumer choices decline, so you can be sure that I will continue to review this merger to determine whether it is in the consumer’s, and indeed our country’s, best interest. Usually, I am all for preserving competition, but in the wireless telecom industry, that could mean a mish-mash of microwave radiation sources that would be more difficult to predict. Such a free-for-all expansion of wireless phone and broadband will make it difficult for people with microwave-sensitivity to find relatively safe places to live.

The wireless explosion is not just a problem for people with electromagnetic sensitivity. The World Health Organization recently put cell phone use on its list of potential carcinogens based on current studies. So, to expand this technology's reach and scope before further studies prove it to be harmless is not "in our country's best interest," as Sen. Kohl says. It is risky and dangerous. At the state level, Senator Leibham and Rep. Kestell passed legislation to unleash telecom companies in the state in the name of jobs. But wireless jobs come at a high price, putting the public's health at risk. When approached about the issue, both legislators were noncommittal. Rep. Kestell indicated there are "competing interests at play" and Sen. Leibham said he would "review and consider the impacts of this technology as we continue to debate this issue at the state level."

Clearly, consumers cannot depend on Petri, Kohl, Leibham, Kestell or the FCC to look out for our safety and well-being in this matter. What we can do is educate ourselves and choose to purchase and use only products that are proven to be conclusively safe. Perhaps our legislators will catch up to the information about wireless risks at some point, but maybe not. After all, there is a lot of money to be made in the wireless industries. And remember how long it took for the acknowledgement of the danger of cigarette products with the influence of Big Tobacco?

Milwaukee Chicken Ordinance Problems

All it will take is Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's okay on the city council's ordinance to be able to keep a few hens in your city backyard. (He has seven days to decide.) Supporters feel it will get people outside more, interacting as they share eggs and reap natural fertilizer. They've already got hen keeping rights in Madison, a place where alternative foods ideas are commonplace.

This seemingly healthy idea has potential downsides, including the following:

Without a proper set-up, the hens could be in danger from area cats or unsupervised kids. So, who will visit home coops to make sure the areas are in compliance? In these times of budget cuts, how can Milwaukee afford to pay people to keep on top of this?

The city certainly does not need breeding grounds for disease from those who don't follow the rules. And though the chances might be small, living in close contact with birds does pose a risk if and when the bird flu resurfaces.

I actually like the idea of natural, fresh food despite the potential problems this ordinance. Chickens are apparently quieter than dogs (no roosters will be allowed). And fresh eggs are always better than store-bought ones. But the fact you can only keep them for eggs and not for poultry seems a bit wasteful. Instead, the beloved hens' ashes may end up in urns on the mantel next to Rover's and Fido's.

Mayor Barrett has pledged to try to "not ruffle anyone's feathers" regarding this ordinance. Look for his decision early next week to see if he manages to pull it off.

But when my teen and I heard about Milwaukee's new cackler ordinance this morning, we flew into a brainstorm of these considerations not mentioned by others:

You can't nail down chickens. That means stolen chickens in bad neighborhoods. And butchered chickens, despite a law against it. Though some see hens as nice pets, face it, they can make a meal, unlike dogs or cats. Even if you brand or label your hens, it won't matter once they're wafting a sweet barbecue wind from the thief's grill.

How about irresponsible keepers? A certain percentage of people doing this will not follow the rules, and who is going to go around inspecting their fowl yards?

And has anyone considered the bird flu issue? Do we really want Milwaukee to become the birthplace of the next pandemic if a virus decides to mutate from pigeons to chickens to neighborhood folks?

I actually like the idea of natural, fresh food despite the potential problems. So, let's be politically correct and inclusive about it then. If Milwaukee allows hens, it would be only fair to allow goats, pigs, even cows if the yard is large enough. Residents would enjoy even more time outside, more fresh food and milk, and more contact with neighbors. Don't be chicken: Why not go whole hog with this grand idea?

Wisconsin Hooked on AmeriCorps

Recently, groups and officials around the state (and nation) celebrated AmeriCorps Week. including Wisconsin Early Childhood Association, the Sheboygan mayor, various colleges and other state beneficiaries of the federal program. In March, Governor Walker gave service awards to Wisconsin AmeriCorps workers, no surprise since the governor appoints the Serve Wisconsin 22 member citizen body. And even federal Republican lawmakers, after vowing to cut the $6 billion AmeriCorps program, decided to shrink its budget by only 6.7 percent.

Where does this deeply rooted federal program come from?
AmeriCorps was born in 1993 when President Clinton signed the National Community Service Trust Act. The national service program received a 50% boost from President George W. Bush, and exploded when President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act in 2009, expanding 75,000 positions to 250,000 by 2017.

This year Wisconsin AmeriCorps will provide more than 2,500 positions, costing more than $26,400,000 to support Wisconsin communities through national AmeriCorps initiatives. The mainly taxpayer funded program is a community organizer's dream, paying people in Wisconsin and elsewhere to work and coordinate volunteers for non-profits, government entities, colleges and schools.

So, what is wrong with this national service program?
With bipartisan support, the program has morphed into an all-purpose progressive slush fund, writes pundit Michelle Malkin. She exposes its recent push to actively sell more people on signing up for food stamps. As the saying goes, the more (dependent people), the merrier (the government bureocracy).

And AmeriCorps works hard to sell itself and grow. To influence public perception, the program even uses its own lingo. Wisconsin Healthcorps document, AmeriCorps & Wisconsin HealthCorps: an Introduction, suggests that workers should be called members, not volunteers, interns, students or employees. What members do is to be referred to as service, not jobs or volunteer positions. Member renumeration must be called a living allowance, not wage, salery or paycheck. And the places members serve must be known as service sites, not work or job sites. These terms are tools to make taxpayers forget this is just another unsustainable government program.

Most importantly, volunteering is alive and well in America without the federal government raising a civilian corps of paid volunteers to work in lock-step with its own self-interest. But who is willing to say it when our local friends, neighbors and family members make up the nice face of AmeriCorps, and the program's P/R includes juicy "cost impact estimates" no locality can refuse? This is exactly the way the government disarms our criticism and grows its own size, reach and influence.

Rapture chasers lose focus on Gospel

The Gospel is the heart of the Christian message: that Jesus Christ took our place and died for our sins so we may have eternal life under him in God's kingdom. All this hype about when the end is coming and how to get ready is pointless. A believer in Jesus Christ has asked him into his or her heart, and with God's help, follows him in daily life.

Not the angels or even the Son know when the end will come, so what folly it is for humans to work so hard to try to predict it. Therefore, rapture chasing is like trying to find the gold at the end of a rainbow. It is looking for something for our own benefit, rather than sticking to the heart of our faith, which is Christ-focused. The Gospel is the only true gold, and if we have that, we have nothing to fear.

The assay, which controlled for sensitization, for pseudo and temporal conditioning, and for several possible sources of artifactual cueing, revealed that irradiation by microwaves, although lacking the saliency of an auditory stimulus, can function as a highly reliable cue. Efficiency of detection was strongly and positively related to the amount of microwave energy to which the rats were exposed.

Rats can sense microwaves and use them as a cue, according to this 1971 study. But humans cannot feel or sense microwaves because, uh. Because, uh, maybe rats are just more sensitive than humans?

Wisconsin Telecommunication Bill AB 14: too many losers

In response to a letter from some business people and various groups, who want immediate action to overhaul the state's telecommunications system, Wisconsin legislators drafted AB 14, and are rushing to get it through before citizens are aware of it. At least, that is how it appears.

Supporters of the bill praise its economic aspects of creating/retaining over 50,000 infrastructure jobs, and impacting the state economy by $2.6 billion. It is also touted for making Wisconsin more competitive for new, high-tech jobs.

I usually applaud modernization, de-regulation and job creation. But this legislation has far-reaching ramifications with definate winners, but too many losers for decades to come.

And the winners are:

*The wireless/broadband industry and businesses that use them to gain jobs, efficiency and profits.
*People who work in wireless-related jobs.
*Individuals who like to use wireless telecommunications devices.
*Legislators, who will receive donations from happy wireless/broadband users.
*The state economy (which is important, so why did they have to omit accountability measures in the bill, making it impossible to support?)

The losers include:

*Any telecom customer who is not treated fairly due to the AB 14 clause (#9) that allows the industry to use "unjust discrimination among customers," and employ "certain unfair trade practices," which were previously prohibited. (#16)
*Any customer who has a problem of any nature with a telecom company, since AB 14 removes any accountability the industry may have had to the Public Service Commission by April 2013.
*Landline telephone providers and all their workers, since they will lose funding to continue jobs and services.
*People who prefer landlines for their unique benefits, including privacy, emergency capability and safety, as compared to cell phones, which are also not conclusively proven to be biologically harmless.
*Wisconsin residents with medical implants, who can experience interference from cell phones, and need landlines.
*Wisconsin residents who cannot use wireless devices due to Electro-sensitivity, a disabling condition recognized by the WHO.
*Legislators, who will not be supported by the people left behind in this bill.

Wisconsin legislation should not be creating losers when it comes to statewide access to essential emergency and communications services, and individuals' control over their health and safety. Please tell state legislators to re-write AB 14 with more respect for the needs and rights of Wisconsin consumers and residents.

Radio frequency transmissions are also being successfully used to make rats feel uneasy and leave an area. Likewise, the pulsing RF radiation from various wireless devices is making some PEOPLE feel sick and uneasy, chasing them away from their own homes and neighborhoods, creating homeless nomads. Today, Maundy Thursday, and tomorrow, Good Friday, we walk with our Lord as He is arrested, mocked and killed by our fellow human beings. It could have been us yelling for his death, denying our love for him to others or washing our hands of the innocent man's fate. We all have that potential for hatred and sin.

But God sent his Son to save all who follow him from our due fate. Even our belief in Jesus is a gift; we can claim no credit for it.

As a woman, this part of the story always gives me chills.

Are U.S. government microwave mind-control tests causing TV presenters' brains to melt down?

This recent article is correct that the garbled speech and illness of several high-profile announcers is consistent with possible symptoms from microwave exposure. But today's numerous sources of microwave radiation could be to blame rather than some shady government plot (although I could be wrong). The new soup of microwave radiation from cell phones, cell towers, smart meters and broadband/wi-fi is already harmful for people who have electrosensitivity. No central authority is keeping track of the mixture of microwave levels. And healthy people can develop this sensitivity with enough exposure.

Of course, the garbled announcers could have been affected by other factors unrelated to the environment. But it is always a good idea to try to be aware of all the possibilities.

Tell FCC to maintain landlines

The FCC wants to phase out support for landlines and shift support solely to wireless broadband telephone systems. But despite the popularity of cell phones, landlines still have their advantages and ought to be maintained.

Pros and cons of landlines can be found here, here and here. In a nutshell, landlines do not offer mobility and cost more, but they come in handy and can be crucial in emergencies when cell phone reception is uneven or you can't find where you put the dang thing. Switched lines also let emergency personnel know your location.

Other problems with cell phones include privacy issues. Anyone with the right frequency can tap into conversations. The tiny, fragile devices can also be lost or broken and need to be charged to work, not possible when the power is out. Some silly folks might even forget to charge their cell once in a while and run into problems.

Some individuals prefer not to use cell phones for health reasons. The health risks of cell phones are gradually being verified. Some of that information is referenced here, here and here. The truth is that cell phones are not proven to be safe, especially for children. Parents who want to protect their kids from being guinea pigs for wireless radiation need to have landlines available. People with medical implants are also reporting interference from radiofrequency devices, including cell phones. Plus nearly ten million Americans have electromagnetic sensitivities (3%) and if landlines are no longer available, we will end up with no telephones we can routinely use.

I'm not saying people shouldn't be able to use cell phones, but that we should have the choice and option to use landlines as a backup or primary phone. The FCC intends to end our ability to choose. Please let them know by April 18 that you want them to continue to maintain landlines.

She’s water under the bridge, sailor

At least ex-sailor Steve Daubert, who is desperately seeking his past love from Milwaukee, is not from Wisconsin. That is the only good thing about this story, which drags the state into a tawdry limelight (thank you, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel). Here is my take on the plight of this retired Washington man, who clearly has too much time on his hands.

Why Daubert is searching for his old Wisconsin flame - Mary:

His ego: He thinks his apology is important forty years later, even though Mary would not commit to him then. Why would she care about his apology now? She probably has forgotten the whole darned conversation, while he is still thinking about it.

Middle-age crisis: He looks back to his younger days with yearning and longs to reconnect with his own prowess from that time and the sweetness of young love’s angst.

Closure: It truly bothers him that he was wrong in that old argument, and he needs to express his regrets and be forgiven by Mary. But any psychologist could help him deal with this without traipsing back to the other person, who is unavailable to work these feelings out with.

Why Daubert should not search for Mary:

Mary has moved on. She may have married, perhaps discovered she was gay or even died since then. If she was unwilling to commit to him in 1972, why would she want to hear from him now?

Why would Mary want the five photos the 59-year-old retired man kept of her all these years? She surely has plenty of other pictures from her younger days. During the past 37 years of Steve’s marriage to another woman why didn’t he throw them out? The fact he held onto the pictures is creepy.

Daubert should respect his wife and their life together. The guy’s wife might say she’s OK with it, but this could easily hurt or worry her on some level. Obviously, the idiot hasn’t thought of that, or if he has, does not care.

It took “a random meeting with some retired Wisconsin teachers at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico” to jog Steve Daubert’s memories of the Wisconsin girl of his dreams from years ago. Perhaps Mary will also have some vague memory surface when she sees the article about the sailor she left behind forty years ago – and just roll her eyes.

Rock Veteran Jim Peterik Talks Songwriting in Sheboygan

People of all stripes came to participate in this amazing workshop that was a refreshing break from all things political for this blogger.

Thirty-eight fans, friends, and songwriter-types paid their $10 (a steal!) and took a seat on stage at the Weill Center for the Performing Arts in Sheboygan facing rock icon Jim Peterick for his workshop, “Pennies From Heaven: How to Make Money as a Songwriter” last Saturday prior to his evening concert with band Ides of March. The long-time singer-songwriter - his wiry form displaying a timeless energy - greeted us by shaking our hands and asking our names.

During the next hour, Peterik discussed and demonstrated songwriting techniques, while peppering his talk with plenty of vignettes from his own life. He and band buddies Bob Bergland and Larry Millas also rolled out bare-bones (but exciting) acoustic renditions of some of his well-known tunes, including “Vehicle,” “Hold on Loosely,” “The Search is Over,” and of course, “Eye of the Tiger.” During one song, he called out structural points - part A, B, chorus, bridge - as he sang.

“How do you know when a song (you are writing) is done?” asked one person. “Ask what does it do to you? It’s got to make you feel,” answered Peterik, who said too much revising usually makes a song worse. Go back to the second or third revision for the best one, he said.

Here are two of Jim’s tips that were especially interesting to anyone who writes poetry or vocal music:

To get a song started, get a riff going, then just “sing gibberish to get the syllables going.”

Keep a daily log of ideas, things people say, newspaper headlines, anything that strikes you. Jim has been keeping idea journals since the 7th grade and showed us his current thick notebook. He revealed that the title for his song “The Search is Over” was sparked by that same phrase in a newscast reporting the search was over for a missing 6-year-old girl.

More songwriting tips and advice can be found in Peterik’s book, Songwriting for Dummies. When asked to write the book about ten years ago, he said he had not really thought about his process and had to figure out what he was doing instinctively so he could share it. Of course, there is no way Jim could tell us how to have a song come to us in a dream, which he sometimes experiences. And when asked how he writes his melodies, he said, "I hear them...It's a gift, one of my birth packages."

Even for those who do not have that songwriting "birth package" this was a fascinating opportunity to rub elbows with a colorful veteran of the music world. Besides his musical talent, the workshop showed that Peterik has the ability to convey the technical aspects of his craft while encouraging others. We listened, asked questions, and basked in the glow of the man’s creativity. Even Jim’s blue-tinged hair added to the sense he was on fire.

Public Worker Protest at Sheboygan Liberty Coalition Event - more pictures

Those of you who have followed my blog have seen a lot of pictures of people at town hall meetings and tea party events. I have been getting great editing practice exploring effective clipping angles to capture people's emotions and signage in various meeting rooms and parks. Do you know how hard it is to clip this kind of picture into a decent finished view when you don't want to cut off someone's arm or ear, but you do not use fancy photo-shop tools to fill in places? Another challenge is trying to snap the moment but not wanting to get in people's faces. The result is sometimes not perfectly focused (like in the first image above), but the pictures still(hopefully) resonate.

After a while, when you take pictures, these various protests might all kind of run together in that the people all have impassioned faces, signs with slogans, voices raised in chant or song, no matter their positions. But if you really look, you see not a faceless group, but individual Americans expressing their convictions with the resolve to make a difference in their lives. And it is beautiful (even if we do not agree.)

Public Worker Protest Eclipses Sheboygan Liberty Coalition Event, Grothman Visit

It wasn't about them. But that did not stop about 200-some Sheboygan area teachers and public workers from clogging the entrance way at Mead Library last night to protest Governor Walker's budget prior to the Sheboygan Liberty Coalition's screening of the film, The Cartel. While the movie does deal with education system problems, such as fraud and waste of taxpayer money, coalition spokeswoman Oriannah Paul told me the screening and an appearance by Senator Glenn Grothman had been planned long before the current state budget became an issue. "It was a coincidence," she said.

The movie - in a nutshell - focused on how to teach the children most effectively and efficiently by empowering teachers and parents to choose what actually works, while identifying and eliminating waste and corruption in the system. The teachers' union in the documentary, the New Jersey Educators Association, appeared to be more interested in maintaining its own power than encouraging schools to reward good teachers, dismiss bad ones, and reign in corruption.

School fraud and waste in New Jersey was evidenced in the funding of excessive building projects and facilities, and huge numbers of non-teaching staff with cushy benefits and pay. Money actually disappeared in several of the cases, and was never accounted for. "It's for the kids" were the magic words that enabled some school employees and administrators to line their own pockets, rather than create lean, meaningful teaching machines.

The Sheboygan Liberty Coalition had invited Senator Glenn Grothman to come and answer questions following the screening about how these problems applied to Wisconsin education. Likely, this was one reason the protesters gathered. And when he arrived, the senator was pretty much monopolized by the demonstrators, who propped up their signs against the meeting room walls and bombarded the speaker with concerns about their jobs.

Grothman took the impromptu listening session in stride, noting that Madison and Sheboygan were like bookends for him because he had "a nice demonstration on both ends of my journey." He went on to explain that the budget adjustment bill is being initiated in the assembly instead of the senate due to the 14 delinquent Democrat senators, who fled the state.

Grothman clarified the collective bargaining change, which he deemed fiscally necessary to allow mayors, county executives and school administrators to be able to operate efficiently within their own budgets. A man asked, but why not just negotiate with the unions now? Grothman said because, for example, some school districts spend $23,000 versus $15,000 or 16,000 on the same benefit because the union always refuses to take the less expensive plan. They have insisted upon a more expensive plan for a decade or more, he said.

A woman stood up when called upon and asked, who is speaking for the taxpayers in collective bargaining? Next, another woman detailed teacher lay-offs in her Howards Grove school district. Grothman said taxpayers are clearly not represented in collective bargaining situations for public employees. And he answered the Howards Grove teacher, who complained that laid off teachers cannot support the economy, that Governor Walker is working to help teachers retain their jobs and to grow the economy.

Grothman fielded more questions, including a young man who said many people are not making what they used to make, and without a union, what can they do? A woman across the room piped up and said that the Kohler Company had improved things for its workers without a union. The senator also told the worried man that employers appreciate good workers, and would want to do what they could to keep them.

Even if one might sympathize with the public workers's feelings, this was not necessarily a good way to present their case. One person who came for the movie reported she had felt intimidated by the "yelling mob" near the door. A couple other people told me they had called their older parents to tell them not to come to the program after seeing the large, chanting group at the entrance of the library.

Besides that, many of the signs had messages aimed at Governor Walker, who most of us elected to fix the state budget - which he is trying to do. Anger at local employers were expressed by a sign that read, "Mr. Kohler, Mr. Bemis, Are you paying your share?"

Another anti-business sign said: "The Real Cartels, Banks + Corporations, Not Teachers + Nurses." How can these supposedly educated people, who teach and take care of our kids, push this divisive class warfare garbage and expect us to support them? The idea is plain, old stupid: the public sector NEEDS a successful private sector to fund their jobs, lend them money, sell them food and clothes, etc., etc.

New scientific study explains health risk of smart meters

Today, everyone is exposed to more and more microwave fields from cell phones, cell towers, Wi-Fi and wireless utility meters. Most people will say, ho-hum, so what? But some people are getting sick from these microwave exposures radiating into their living spaces. And a new scientific study has just come out showing that levels from transmitting meters on homes can exceed the current FCC standard for exposure to microwaves.

Here are a few inconvenient facts about this issue:
*No one is measuring or keeping track of the mixture of levels of multiple fields in our daily lives.
*No federal agency will accept or compile complaints on wireless devices based on health concerns or effects.
*FCC standards are based on old levels before the proliferation of wireless devices. (So, not even meeting the out-dated FCC standards is a serious allegation voiced by the new study).

The wireless industry and its government supporters insist the bulk of studies are not conclusive in proving this technology is harmful. But if you include the many independent studies, the technology is not definitively proven to be biologically safe by any means.

It is clear that the companies and government entities benefiting from the spread of wireless would rather make Americans into guinea pigs than pursue comprehensive, conclusive studies to be completed BEFORE further proliferation.

I predict that microwave soup is the "cigarette smoke" hazard of this era. Due to the pleasures of wireless (like smoking), much denial and resistance is sure to come before society properly deals with this new, far-reaching health hazard.

Hybrid cars - another (green) health hazard

The hasty race to be green has created new dangers. This supposed solution to gasoline engine pollution can harm the health of those who choose it. The levels of electromagnetic fields in a hybrid car apparently rival those sitting beneath high power lines.

Health risks can also be found with wind turbines, CFL light bulbs and smart meters. These devices are supposed to "save the earth," but in the meantime, they expose the people to potentially harmful fields and emissions through the air or on home wiring.

I interviewed Dr. Pamela Jaffke, a veterinarian in Owen, Wisconsin, who is suffering because of the bullheadedness of her utility company, Xcel Energy. They, along with the other state power companies and the Public Service Commission, refuse to take action to improve the safety of their product in spite of the continuous stream of health complaints like Dr. Jaffke's over the years.

It is time for the Wisconsin utilities to stop releasing their voltage trash - known as transients and harmonics - into the ground, and upgrade the system statewide to protect people, and not just cows, from exposure to biologically harmful ground currents.

Since realizing she was electrically sensitive, Dr. Pamela Jaffke, a dairy veterinarian in Owen, has worked to make her house safe. Stetzerizer filters helped a bit, but were unable to bring the electrical pollution levels down far enough. "The only thing that made things truly livable, I just unhooked the neutral from the water main," she says.

Then her home's electrical pollution levels spiked November 1 following some work to the sewer pipes, which stopped them from carrying the ground currents, and she and her cat, Magic, were hit hard with debilitating symptoms. "It was an absolute disaster for both of us and it's continued that way," says Jaffke, who has Multiple Sclerosis, and gets painful tingling in her legs from this electrical exposure. Her cat has trouble walking and stops eating.

Xcel came out and ran circles around her without addressing the problem, she told me. "If I was a dairy farm, they would be forced to do something. Anything over 1/2 volt, they are forced to do something," says the veterinarian. The current readings in her home range from 1/2 to one volt.

Wisconsin law currently protects cows from high levels of stray voltage, which Jaffke says is not "stray." "Xcel put it there and it is Xcel's problem," she says. The term stray voltage only legally applies to cows. The currents are referred to as electrical pollution in relation to humans. "But there's no laws to protect people," says Jaffke.

Not a New Issue

The health menace of stray voltage/electrical pollution is not a new issue. Wisconsin journalists have blazed a fiery trail to try to expose it. Reporter Chris Hardie at the La Crosse Tribune had won five Wisconsin journalism awards and was nominated for a 2000 Pulitzer Prize for work covering the issue, including a special website dedicated to it, while journalist Kurt Gutknecht had been fired as editor of the Wisconsin Agriculturist for continuing to write about the health affects on animals and the farmers themselves.

State Representative Barb Gronemus, D-Whitehall, had proposed legislation in 2003 to force the utilities to clean up their act. The legislation died in committee despite huge support exhibited at a public hearing September 18, 2003. Supporters blame pressure from the big utilities on the lawmakers for its failure.

At a volt, I'm objecting.

Today, Dr. Jaffke insists she is covered by the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) 92D, which states that there should be no objectionable flow of current over the earth. "At a volt, I'm objecting," she says.

It is likely to be an uphill battle. Xcel Energy has a history of fighting customers over health issues. They argued in a 2008 article that the cow deaths could be blamed on other factors than stray voltage. In an article in the La Crosse Tribune on December 11, 2006, Xcel and the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin claimed that no credible scientific evidence had been raised "that suggests the electrical system in Wisconsin is unsafe or causes any health problems in humans."

Such resistance to customers' needs and safety is deeply ingrained in the untouchable utilities and their unaccountable defender despite numerous studies showing harm, and the nonstop procession of people reporting illness over decades. Owen Council Meeting

Dr. Jaffke is enlisting the help of her city to help deal with the powerful utility. She explained her case and read a list of lies Xcel told her during the Owen city council meeting on December 15. For example, the utility told her that the 5-wire system is unsafe. But, adding a fifth wire would easily correct the problem of electrical pollution for her - and for all residents statewide.

This acceptable, effective method appears in the 1995 report from the research arm of the utilities, the Electric Power Research Institute. It states: "A method that practically eliminates ground currents associated with primary distribution line and still maintains the advantage of a four-wire multi-grounded system is a five-wire system."

It would just cost pennies to do, says Jaffke. It is such a simple solution, she told Owen council members, who were alarmed to hear about the serious health effects the respected veterinarian and her cat were experiencing. The council meets in a building right behind her house, "which pretty much implies that they're getting fried, too," says the human "canary in the mine."

Jaffke hopes her city will have the will and the legal clout to get results. She says, "The city has an obligation to protect their citizens and make sure that any corporation doing business in town is up to code."

Owen mayor Tim Swiggum said during a telephone interview that they plan to go at this from both ends: They will talk to the guys who help them when they are extending power lines to see if that area of town is overloaded, and they also will meet with the higher-ups at the utility to see what they have to say about this problem.

"It's fairly new to me," says Mayor Swiggum, who has begun to educate himself on this controversial issue. "I don't want to burn any bridges. We need the electric company," he adds, though he agrees that Pam Jaffke definitely needs help with the problem in her house.

Jaffke told me she warned the city, "Xcel is going to try to tell you that everything's fine just like they told me. You'll have to be able to refute every one of their arguments. They're not just going to roll over and do whatever you say."

The Owen resident says she just wants a resolution to the problem, and hopes the city can help. But she would not mind if the utility ended up suing her because "in court they'll be exposed as a fraud."

"I'm not after money. I don't care if Xcel would give me a million dollars right today. That's not going to buy my cat's health. That's not going to buy my health," the Owen veterinarian says.

How Can People Check Their Own Homes?

Jaffke says the way to check for voltage coming into your home is to borrow or buy a $50 volt meter. A trifield meter will show the microwave frequencies coming into the house. So, for about $200 people could get together and purchase both meters. "Between a trifield meter and a volt meter you have all the tools you need to figure out the garbage that's coming into your house," she says.

National, state and local speakers at the Sheboygan Freedom Rally on September 4 made a rousing call to arms – to link all our arms and work together for a November victory, that is. About 2,000 patriots attended the Sheboygan Liberty Coalition and Wisconsin chapter of Americans for Prosperity rally at Fountain Park, a place with a colorful soap boxing history.

The rally opened with a stirring invocation by Reverend David King, who is a candidate for Wisconsin Secretary of State.
Citizen Thomas Paine (Bob Basso) followed with a warning: A George Soros/Acorn/OFA (Organizing for America) plan called Operation Knock-out will use up to 100,000 volunteers to attempt to “out-walk, out-telephone, out-lick envelopes and out-knock on doors than you…in every precinct in America.” And they are targeting Wisconsin, he said.

Paine called for a giant state non-partisan coalition to unify on one single goal: “Elect candidates who understand defiance of this government is a virtue. Getting rid of them is a moral duty…Are you ready, Sheboygan, to step into the ring with Acorn and float like a butterfly, sting like a bee?” he asked the crowd.

Moderator Charles Windsor listens to local poet Ron Ziller read his homespun rhyme, with one verse answering Paine’s question, loud and clear:

We have the power if we all vote.
And that seems to scare them, too.
I’ll warn that bunch, just take note:
We’ll be getting rid of you!

The other speakers discussed several important Wisconsin fronts needing our attention. Here they are, organized by theme, rather than program order:

Ethan Hollenberger, a Marquette University student, announced, “I come to you from the liberal world of academia, where I am standing up and fighting for the conservative cause.”

The young patriot suggested looking at Obama’s YouTube channel to get an idea of all the popular movie stars, singers and comedians, who are influencing students to vote for liberals. He plugged Young Americans Foundation as a way to fight back. YAF trains students to become pro-active activists.

Popular singer Krista Branch revved up the audience with a rendition of her single, I Am America.

Radio talk show host/business expert Herman Cain spoke at the very end of the rally, which went over-time. Unfortunately, I could not stay to hear him. Check with the Sheboygan Liberty Coalition for his speech.

Linda Hansen of the Wisconsin AFP rallied for help in demanding this state’s overseas military members are sent their ballots in time. Her own son, a Marine, never received his 2004 ballot when he was serving in Iraq at the time of the Iraqi election. How ironic that he would be denied the right to vote.

The Military Overseas Voter Empowerment Act (MOVE) unanimously passed at the federal level to insure all overseas servicemen and women would get their ballots in time to return them. But Hansen sparked, Wisconsin applied for a waiver because “they did not want to send ballots out 45 days ahead to insure our overseas military would be able to vote.”

To change this state outrage, Hansen said to contact the Government Accountability Board, our state legislators and the Governor. The GAB believes there are plenty of other ways the state allows overseas military people to vote. However, not all state residents have had that experience, as Hansen asserts. Nationally known multi-faceted political commentator/analyst/writer Dick Morris dove right into the Wisconsin scene. “For Russ Feingold to pose as a moderate, as an independent…my goodness, it shows how far we’ve come when Russ Feingold tries to dress up like us. But that act of transvestitism is going a little far even for Greenwich Village and San Francisco – or Madison.” Here is another colorful comparison Morris made to get his point across:

Morris asserted conservatives need ten votes to win the Senate, and Wisconsin is on that list. The state is ground zero of the epic earthquake coming this fall, said Morris. “You don’t have to sit back this year and watch while California and Florida and Texas make history. You can do it right here in Wisconsin,” he added. His final message to Wisconsin incumbents used yet another figure of speech (simile):

Summarizing the national scene, Morris said, “Obama is putting his social engineering ahead of the need to recover.” After we take back control in November, we ought to bring spending down to the level of taxes instead of raising taxes up to the level of spending like the current regime is doing, he said.

To prepare for the coming election and counter the opposition, Americans for Prosperity is rolling out a “freedom phone” and massive door-to-door campaign. “I need your help,” said Mark Block, state director of AFP. “There’s one organization that’s bigger than we are – it’s called WEAC. They’ve got 92,000 members. We can beat them (and their special interest agenda) by November,” he said.

Block built the Wisconsin AFP from 250 members to over 80,000. His goal is 100,000 by November. He said he knew the group was being effective when two weeks ago “the President of the United States called us out by name and said some pretty bad things about us. But go back a year when we were called Astroturf when none of us were for real.” 100,000 people have shown up to AFP events since April 2009, which would hardly be attributed to Astroturf,” he commented.

This leads to the question that keeps popping up, who are the tea party people, really? NE Wisconsin radio host Jerry Bader of WTAQ-Green Bay noted that we have recently been called “relatively affluent” by Paul Krugman of the New York Times. And no one is angrier these days than the very rich, he wrote.

With tongue in cheek, Bader quipped, “I am so proud not to be part of the caviar club…I just followed the Rolls Royce’s and I knew I was in the right place.” Last year they called us “toothless, gun-toting, moon-shining, drinking hillbillies…We’ve come a long way,” he said.

Bader set the record straight about who we are: We are Americans…we’re not angry, we’re frustrated.” As for who we’re not, he chimed:

*Just because we are frightened of the direction Obama and Congress are taking this country in doesn’t make us racists. It has nothing to do with the color of skin but with the direction they are taking this country.
*That we believe in the land of opportunity for everyone regardless of race or ethnicity, everyone who comes here legally is not racist.
*Because we believe marriage is between one man and one woman doesn’t make us hateful.
*Because we believe we know a hell of a lot better how to spend out own money than the government doesn’t make us greedy.
*Because we’re silly and actually don’t think the government can run healthcare better than the private sector doesn’t make us void of compassion nor does it make us radical.

The left was able to marginalize us when there were just a few of us. Later, they started lying about us, said Bader. “And when they couldn’t vilify us, they tried to shut us up,” he added. “And they will continue to try to silence us.” This is exactly why I and other bloggers continue to cover and document these events and people. And here we are:

T-28 Trojan Planes Wow Sheboygan: Photos

At least eighteen T-28 Trojan planes of the North American Trainer Association T-28 Formation Clinic performed stunt and formation feats before rapt crowds at the Sheboygan County Airport July 24 and 25 as a prelude to their EAA appearance this week. Here are more photos from this top-notch Aviation Heritage Center event.

Also, check out the end of this post for exclusive AUDIO of the T-28s (which my husband finds soothing!) The motors were recycled from B-17 planes after WW2 and put into the T-28s. You need to hear four T-28s together to get that B-17 rumble, since B-17s used four motors. The clip includes a tad of the Marines Hymn, which was part of a special tribute to the armed forces in the show. Enjoy!

Is the redistribution of wealth Christian?

I have heard Christians tout Jesus as the first socialist, and claim that humans are supposed to redistribute wealth. But is the redistribution of wealth compatible with Christianity?

True Christian justice follows the will of God as communicated through the Bible. The forced redistribution of wealth and material possessions by the government goes against God’s will of both the old and new testaments.

Forced redistribution breaks at least three of the O.T. commandments that Christians aim to follow. (Note: Jesus did not come to negate the O.T. law, but to forgive us when we fall short, as all people do.)

The 1st Commandment to have no other gods is broken in many ways. Putting a government in the position of God to define justice is one way to break this commandment. And who needs God if the government has the final say? Placing our faith, hope and trust in human leaders to create their vision of heaven on earth is not Christian. Human creations are flawed unless they act according to the will of God. Leaving God’s way behind insures failure and dark times.

Forced redistribution also breaks the 7th and 9th Commandments. If Christians fear and love God, we will not want “to take our neighbor’s money or possessions…but help him to improve and protect his possessions and income.” (Luther’s Small Catechism, p. 13) We Christians are not supposed to promote the coveting or theft of people’s material possessions. Supporting a government that steals more and more of what people earn and own to pass it out to others is not God’s will for us. Christian charity involves free-will, voluntary giving.

And finally, our N.T. Savior called his disciples to leave their old lives and follow him. He did not force anyone outside that circle of devotees to live in a communal system. Early Christians willingly chose to live that way.

Christ told us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Do we want what we have acquired to be ripped away through institutionalized theft? If we want to voluntarily give to others, that has God’s blessing. But Jesus did not tell us to love only some neighbors and to steal from others. He encouraged his followers to be generous as individuals and through the church. Our Lord never promoted the strong-armed redistribution of what people have by a godless, power-hungry government. Powers and principalities outside of God’s kingdom attempt to gain dominion over this world. I hope Christians will carefully consider the proper role of government in light of God’s will, and turn to the Bible as the authoritative source.

Thomas Sowell ponders people's "duty to die"

One of my heroes, Thomas Sowell, has an eye-opening, thoughtful column on where this idea about older folks "duty to die" comes from. I have always been bothered some by the separation of families, who put their older ones in homes so they can live unfettered. I know some people need medical care and supervision, but in many ways, the way this society lives is very selfish.

Of course, caring for others is not easy, and it can be irritating to have a parent in the home again. But what ARE our values, anyways? Mr. Sowell pointed out the education system teaches this calloused approach to our fellow human beings. The way his family took in "Aunt Nance Ann" is how it SHOULD be, especially if you are a Christian. None of his family had a college degree when they showed this compassion and love. Obviously, having a college degree does not mean you are ethical or loving. The value of "higher" education is questionable in the arena of learning morality!

Feingold in Plymouth, same old same old

I went to Senator Feingold's listening session in Plymouth this past Monday all set to report the details using recorded clips and photos. But you know, it was just the same old story there. Some of the people in the Plymouth High School auditorium stood up and spoke with their hands out, what can you do for me, and give me, give me? Others, the majority of speakers, posed probing, critical questions the senator answered by patting himself on the back for what he's done, or saying how half of the state sides with his view.

A couple small businessmen gave scenarios about how the health care change would hurt them. Feingold said, well, he'd have to think about these new scenarios. Ya, right. Other audience members re-capped how we have had the best health care in the world, and why did he want the government to mess with it. Several students asked questions, like how are you going to help us, help us, pay for college. (get a job, I wanted to say) The mayor of Plymouth and the principal of the school both participated, concerned about what Feingold could do for their districts. Etc. Etc.

Guess I'm kinda tired, or maybe shell-shocked, from these so-called listening sessions when they do not result in any shift in policies, awareness or positions. Maybe I just need to tread water, rest in the shallows, gather energy to make it to NOVEMBER. That is when I will add my voice to the throngs and vote this senator, who does not represent me, OUT. Obama wagging the "tea-bagger" word in patriotic Americans' faces

"Let's seize reform. It's within our grasp," Obama demanded of a recent audience, continuing to ignore the will of the American people!

But, if most Americans wanted this kind of "reform," the president would not have to "seize" it. And who did he mean when he said, "It's within OUR grasp?" Who was he inviting to join him in "seizing reform?" The answer is those who desire control over others, rather than allowing free choices.

Obama and his bobble headed minions are blatantly choosing to govern without the consent of the governed. And if the bill passes, it will be fought and reversed. Tyranny will not be tolerated.

Community Organizing Groups Dupe Wisconsin Christians

I recently learned at a workshop for conservatives in Sheboygan how several community organizer (CO) groups with radical leftist connections and aims have been partnering with churches in Wisconsin. Some churches support the forced redistribution required by "social justice" so it is not a surprise to see the company they keep. Yet, problems arise if churches are not aware of the full mission of an organization, or when donations are being funneled there without church members being told what their tithes and offerings are supporting.

According to the workshop leaders, CO groups’ nice-sounding goals, like helping the poor and needy, often obscure their deeper purpose – to push for big government, and redistributive, socialistic agenda. The interfaith groups twist the scripture to their own ends, and benefit from their association with churches, gaining legitimacy and resources to be able to lobby legislators. They insist they are nonpartisan, but consistently lobby for far left policies, said the speakers.

A February 26 column by Tom Murphy in the Appleton Post-Crescent exposed the structure and money path of one of these groups, JOSHUA of Green Bay. JOSHUA’s sister organizations include ESTHER of Appleton, SOPHIA of Waukesha, RIC of Racine, JOB of Beloit, CUSH of Kenosha, MICAH of Milwaukee, AMOS of LaCrosse, and JONAH of Eau Claire. WISDOM is their statewide umbrella, which sends money to the Gamaliel Foundation of Chicago. Murphy described Gamaliel’s true mission: “The organization envisions units in every metropolitan area and would break down whatever local ordinances it deemed in opposition to its socialistic goals.”

Interestingly, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Green Bay has just called for JOSHUA and ESTHER to sever ties with their state organization in order to continue a relationship, saying the national group’s strategies run counter to Catholic teachings. It is not clear if the opposition’s information campaign affected this case.

The workshop presenters claimed Gamaliel is one of four main CO groups represented in the state. The other three are Industrial Areas Foundation, or IAF (includes Common Ground and Dane County United), Wisconsin Council of Churches and Wisconsin Catholic Conference.

Both Gamaliel and IAF were built around the radical ideology and techniques of 1960s Marxist, Saul Alinksy.“The hell with charity, the only thing you’ll get is what you are strong enough to get,” said this Father of Community Organizing, a heck of a role model for a church partner.

The Wisconsin Council of Churches has sometimes worked with WISDOM. It and/or the Wisconsin Catholic Conference have promoted numerous left-wing causes, including the business-killing Clean Energy Jobs bill, unshakable belief in human-caused global warming, pro-abortion rights, rights to food, health care, clothing and shelter for all people regardless of citizenship or immigration status (no one has such "rights" under the Constitution), expanded eligibility for contraceptive services to qualified men and teens age 15-44, and universal government-run health care.

Such radical community organizing groups have the right to promote their opinions and beliefs, and to work with churches that still accept them upon full disclosure of their purposes and methods. Likewise, church members have the right – and the responsibility – to research the philosophy, goals, and roots of partnering groups and take control of what their tithes and offerings support.

Leibham Fights for Jobs and Accountability

Senator Joe Leibham works hard for the people of his district and the state despite being in the minority party in Madison. The 9th district senator admitted at a listening session in Sheboygan on February 20 how it sometimes feels to be outnumbered, yet that does not stop him from striving to make a positive difference for the people he serves his eighth year in office.

Leibham has built a reputation of being exceptionally accessible, responsive and informative to his constituents. “I best do my job when I have a good understanding and feeling of what constituents that I represent are thinking in regard to issues,” he said at his Sheboygan listening session - number six out of thirteen planned throughout the district. And the Republican senator faithfully keeps pumping out ideas and legislation to fight for jobs and the economy, attempting to counter the negative impact of Democrat policies, which are based on their underlying philosophy:

On the other hand, Senator Leibham’s “top philosophy” as a legislator is concerned with the needs of the private sector and consumers:

When a constituent asked, “What do you feel the state could do better, or not at all, to help create jobs and get things moving?” Leibham answered the question from several angles.

Senator Leibham carefully listened and responded to questions and comments from those among the forty-four people in the room who spoke. Numerous money drains were addressed, including the current global warming bill from Governor Doyle's task force, and unfunded federal mandates for the states. Besides Leibham’s State Rights resolution against such mandates, he is working to limit state mandates on local government:

Maybe a better name for the RTA would be Regional Taxing Authority. Such a lack of government accountability to citizens is a travesty in a country with government supposedly “of the people, by the people and for the people.” Leibham tackled various accountability issues, and gave advice for what the people can, and should, do about it.

This quote from Andy Rooney is fun to counter because it shows the simplistic why-can’t-everyone-just-get-along liberal philosophy that ignores reality.

Likewise, Americans are not like crayons and should not be made into little, uniform writing implements to be used by collectivist rulers. They should not be cut down to fit into boxes the government designs. Americans are a people that colors broadly outside the lines to create the most free, prosperous nation in the world. Sheboygan Constitutional Rally was nonpartisan

Will Americans come together to hear Lady Liberty's call to action before it is too late? Judging from the TEA parties and constitutional rallies going on around the country, the answer is yes.

Many of the 1,100 people at the Constitutional Rally in Sheboygan on February 6 recited an oath to defend the U.S. Constitution led by a member of Oath Keepers. No matter what party affiliation people had, they joined their voices in loyalty to the Constitution’s principles based on each person’s God-given freedom.

Groups of all stripes were present, including libertarians, gun rights advocates, and "prosumers," who promoted making what you need rather than depending on others to produce it. Republican Senator Joe Leibham spoke, but it was not to promote his party. His talk and legislation were in line with the constitutional values of the meeting. The Democratic Party had a table set aside for them. Whether or not it was some kind of joke, no one appeared to show up for duty.

Despite comments that focused on the Republican Party in the local newspaper, the Taxed Enough Already movement is a big tent movement, open to any American fed up with the overgrowth and abuse of power in Washington and in their own state. The Sheboygan rally speakers drove the point home that both major political parties have strayed from the founding principles.

Furthermore, the TEA Party movement is not riding on Republican momentum as the newspaper headline stated. If anything, Republicans have skimmed off momentum from the public awareness brought to Americans by the TEA events. Yet, that is not the purpose of the grassroots movement: TEA aims to revive the basic founding principles that have made Americans prosperous and free.

The focus of this event was education on constitutional principles, and where to go from here. Various speakers offered valuable information and action ideas, including how to judge a candidate for political office , provided by the Oath Keepers speaker. This method can be applied to candidates no matter what party they represent. Look past their campaign record for a track record of knowledge, courage and duty. Then ask these four questions:

*Do they know the Constitution?
*Do they have the courage to follow it?
*Will they stand up to protect and defend the Constitution?
*Do they have the integrity to keep their promise?

The audience was reminded that after the election these people are our employees and we must hold them accountable.

But here is a different angle, sampling the voices of the people present, who included parents, teachers, realtors, union members, librarians, office workers, retired folks and a few flamboyant sorts wearing costumes or hats.

Fake Obama "Vegas Address"

I was inspired by a photo in a caption contest at Real Debate Wisconsin to come up with this speech for President Obama about people "wasting" their money at Las Vegas:

Mainstreet is hurting. I get that. So when I see people throwing away all that money to line the Big Entertainment and Big Gambling executives' pockets, I get angry, really angry. (teleprompter cue: shake fist to emphasize anger)

Now, I know everyday Americans can't afford to pay high roller prices at Sin City anymore. I get that. And I have faith in the American people to do the right thing. It is time to make the right choice for the good of America. It is time to just say, no, to Big Vegas. (teleprompter: buckle eyebrows to show intensity)

Remember, there are better ways to blow, ah, I mean spend your hard-earned money. We all know that necessities like taxes, food, taxes, clothing, college and taxes should come first. So, let's keep our priorities straight. (raise fist again, yeah, that's good)

I know you are listening to me. I get that. So, I'll say, God bless you all, and God bless America, except for those evil entertainment places eating up taxpayer money that should be coming to me. Yeah, yeah, I know there are only ten "I's" in this fabricated speech. The President and his writers possess a special talent for packing them in. It would take a bit of practice to keep up with them.

Tips for "Reviving the Constitution" from Hillsdale College Town Hall

Over 33,000 Americans from all fifty states participated in the Hillsdale College online town hall at the Alan P. Kirby, Jr., Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C., on January 30. It was fitting that the only college in the country that rejects government money would sponsor an event celebrating the U.S. Constitution, which limits the government's powers and upholds individual freedom and choices.

Each of the six speakers at the meeting held informative, inspired sessions, followed by probing questions and cognizant comments from participants. Two speakers focused on the constitutional crisis Americans currently face, and what we can do about it. Mark Steyn, conservative columnist and author, and President of Hillsdale College Dr. Larry P. Arnn offered valuable information and tips to help us revive our Constitution.

Both Mr. Steyn and Dr. Arnn defined aspects of the current crisis. Steyn listed five steps in the government take-over of people's lives. It was shocking to see just how far down the path America has already gone.

Steyn's first step is the benign paternalistic state, where people want government to provide for them. Of course, the money or favors always come with strings attached. The government is also "whimsical" about whom it favors, and whom it chooses to punish.

The second step has the State providing for basic needs, and regulating those it "cares for."

In the third step, the populace agrees to become wards of the State, and the State moves from regulating actions to regulating thoughts.

Step number four finds dissenting ideas and words being labelled as hatred. People are forbidden to express opposition and forbidden to think.

The last step of the take-over kills spiritual, intellectual and creative striving as the people work only enough to get their government goodies or subsistence. Chasing the great ideas of science, religion or art is frowned upon as unnecessary. The government becomes the pusher of dependency to a nation of apathetic junkies.

Dr. Arnn echoed Steyn's alarming message, claiming the current crisis comes from the "systematic departure from the meaning of our nation and the reason behind it." He said, today, "the government has become a force to influence elections...with direct regulations contrived to pick winners and losers." People "are afraid they might be about to lose control...that elections will not be able to make change anymore...that what a lot of us think doesn't matter anymore," added Arnn, getting to the heart of the crisis.

The college president, who is also a Professor of History and Political Science, gave this simple, powerful advice to concerned citizens: "Learn yourself; teach others." His other tips include:

Don't argue for the Constitution, but towards it. Start discussing things with what people know, their families and lives. Ask general questions, such as if they have noticed the government becoming big and intrusive in their lives lately.

Look for politicians who say what they're doing and speak intelligently about the Constitution.

Read and think.

Run a plan for action "by goals, not by rules." Make it simple so anyone can cooperate. And push authority to the lowest level (as done in successful businesses.) The plan should be simple and lead back in slow steps to Constitutional government.

Towards the end of the six-hour event, a man asked Dr. Arnn a question that was likely on the minds of many participants, most of whom dared not ask. To preface his question, the man noted that those speaking out publicly at the event were likely being watched and kept track of by the powers that be. It was chilling to hear an obviously educated, reasoning person feel compelled to say that.

The question was, at what point do Americans say to the government, no more? At what point would it be time for some kind of revolt?

Dr. Arnn gave a careful, honest response, reminding listeners of the long list of grievances and train of abuses collected against the British before Americans resorted to revolution. He said that today the people still have elections and the rule of law to try to affect the direction of the country.

Yet, according to Mark Steyn's 5-steps, America is close to a dangerous point of no return. We, the people, had best keep working to revive the Constitution and its principles to prevent such a disaster. Participating in Hilldale's online Town Hall was one energizing step to take towards our common goal.

I posted my new lyrics for an old Malvina Reynolds song recently, and had a blast slapping an audio take together this afternoon. The 1960s song originally shot darts at the traditional American way of life, and has tons of Malvina Reynolds/Pete Seeger wannabes still belting out renditions at You-Tube.

My "ticky tacky" is just as homespun, using a metal food rack, a glass corningware cover, a cast iron pan, a dog dish and a plastic three-ring binder - all hit with an eggbeater for a little braindead percussion to frame the mood: kind of like merging Harry Partch with the Salvation Army Band? Anyway, the song is about simple-minded uniformity, a decent enough excuse for having my fun at the listener's expense.

Racine Tea Party Bonfire "Roars"

Oath to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution

We arrived at the Anderson farm in Caledonia, Wisconsin at three-o-clock sharp for the Racine Bonfire Tea Party after an hour-and-a-half drive to be met by a cheerful face at the parking lot entrance. Expecting around 500, they had run out of spaces for the 4,000 visitors, so cars lined the streets.

The country backyard site was so packed with elbow to elbow people we literally had to crawl beneath fir branches to get to the bonfire behind the stage area. There, the fire was busy devouring a pile of wooden pallets, beating back the pervasive chill - a perfect symbol for the focused passion at this first Wisconsin tea party of the year; and an apt metaphor for the heat, energy and light the tea party movement is creating nationwide. It was also a great way to say, "out with the old, in with the new" in 2010!

This was the first tea party I actually brought a sign to. Something about having a bonfire inspired me, and in the last hour before hitting the road, I drew up a sign protesting the big-spending, freedom-crushing, unconstitutional health care bill. It was made to feed the fire. What I really wanted to do was burn both House and Senate versions, page by page, as the BEST way to merge them - in the ash heap of history. But I settled for a simple red poster that included front pages from versions of the monstrous bill.

When one of the fire tenders fed my health care bill effigy to the fire, it rose up and blew out of the circle as if in defiance, but was promptly stomped down.

This was not the first tea party bonfire to be attempted. Last November in Danville, Virginia, some people intended to burn effigies of legislators, who had supported the bill. The event was cancelled upon protest of the property owner, who did not approve. IMO, effigy figure burnings are creepy, though certainly not without precedent in American history. But, I'd prefer torching effigies of words, ideas and documents, thank you.

This leads to a related issue laid bare by the Racine County event and its coverage:

What types of angry expressions are "acceptable" at tea party events, and who should decide?

Local WTMJ-TV in usual biased media manner chose to highlight two signs at the event which called Obama the anti-Christ and portrayed him as the Joker. The TV reporter then interviewed State Rep. Cory Mason, who was very critical of those atypical expressions. Mason called for "constructive dialogue," yet did not bother to attend the event to listen to his constituents' concerns. Such one-sided "dialogue" is exactly what the tea parties are protesting.

Neither politicians or the media should decide what's appropriate at a Taxed Enough Already protest. But even Joe Wurzelbacher, the well-known tea party speaker, attempted to soft-pedal the voices of the offensive minority. He asked some people to take down their signs, saying it "undermines our movement." This brings up more questions:

*Who does this movement belong to, and where does free speech fit in?
*Did anyone try to talk to the outspoken few to try to see what they meant by their signs? Could they have had understandable reasons for making the comparisons?
*Or, could they have been "plants" by the opposition, trying to make tea parties appear extreme?
*Might rule #4 in Rules for Radicals (Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules) be in play when protesters are encouraged to silence their own?
*Last but not least, what in the world would WTMJ and its ilk find to say about these events if the more strident voices were censored?

The tea party movement roars on like a hungry bonfire. Surely, we, the people, can harness its immense warmth, energy and light to change the direction of the country without doing harm.

It has taken two years, but I have finally reached 10,000 visitors here. In the blogosphere, that's not even a drop in the bucket, but it's something to me. For a writer who appreciates Emily Dickinson's poem, "I'm nobody, who are you?" blogging surely fits the bill.

Health Care Fever at Petri Town Hall Meeting in Sheboygan

6th District Representative Thomas Petri's January 8 town hall meeting in Sheboygan brought out a crowd of nearly 70 people, a decent turnout for a frigid Friday afternoon. An assortment of issues came up, from the growing freight truck traffic on I43 to eroding veteran benefits, and concerns about illegal immigrants and the national debt.

But, the temperature in the room really started to rise when several folks, including some with serious health problems, spoke about the Democrats’ health care reform bill. Mirroring the national polls, the majority spoke out against it. Nevertheless, the next day, the local newspaper overwhelmingly featured the bill's supporters at the meeting in quotes and photos. To balance that lopsided coverage, here are voices of participants who expressed reservations and concerns about the government overhaul of their health care.

--Why Rep. Petri is against the Democrat form of health care - a parable from a Wisconsin farmer, also shared at Petri's listening session in Howards Grove last August.

These town hall meetings underscore the reality that most Americans do not want a change that messes with their own health care. Unfortunately, those in the minority party cannot stop the party the voters favored. Petri reminded one irate man demanding Washington listen to the people that Sheboygan voted for Obama in 2008. Wisconsin also continues to renew incumbent Democrat senators and many Democrat representatives, who are all responsible for the health care bill's progression towards the finish line. Unless the people make major changes at the polls, the demolition of America's health care system will continue.

--so, can the damage be undone after the bill passes?

New Year's Eve LIGHT

Blue Moon, January 31, 2009, from Southeast Wisconsin, U.S.A.

The shortest day of the year is past, and we flip the page of the calendar once again to start moving towards the longest day of the new year. Makes me think about cycles, ups and downs, birth and death, win and lose, pushes and pulls between polarities. We live in these cycles that are bigger than we are. They overlap, and attract and repel our actions as if we were tiny magnets.

The push and pull of light versus darkness, truth versus lies, liberty versus tyranny are looming large for 2010. I don't know what this year will bring, or what humans will bring to this year. But I pray for peace, for light and truth. Mostly, I pray for the strength of a few sheets of old parchment to hold up against forces that would usher in tyranny. Just 6001 words are protecting the fate of a nation, and perhaps, the world from an end of the hope of liberty. (The original U.S. Constitution has 4543 words, and the Declaration, 1458.)

I've got to say, too, that whatever happens, all these cycles will eventually have a wonderful end with God having the final word. In the meantime, we can do our best to navigate the darkness with His help.

What is behind President Obama?

Just what is supporting the cardboard Obama, the flat, bloodless leader, who gave no comfort or reassurance to the nation following the recent airline "underwear" terrorist attack? What exactly is propping up and propelling his words and actions?

Here are some possible reasons for the President's apparent disinterest in, and failure to reassure America in the face of an attack. How else to make sense of it except to examine what we don't know in light of what we do know?

1) We know Obama has Muslim roots in his background, perhaps affecting his view of radical Islam, maybe making him hesitant to go after members.

2) We know he believes people are harming the climate. Less plane travel would mean less carbon, so "allowing" a bit of terrorist activity to stir up a little fear might cut air traffic, if that were an unspoken goal.

3) We know Obama holds relativist ideas, and does not think America is anything special, even bowing to those who would wish us harm. He puts our enemies equal with us, so why should he care to keep us any more safe than anyone else?

4) We also know the President's views through czars he has appointed, including Janet Napolean-tano, who has called non-liberal Americans terrorists. The President likely agrees, since he said nothing against her comment. And what a waste of energy, going after the wrong people.

Obama's reluctant comments about the terror attempt, given days after the terror event on his Hawaiian holiday, were truly chilling. One wonders if the country elected an anemic president who needs some vitamins, or a shadowy man with hidden goals, which are starting to be revealed. Stay tuned.

Dear Santa, from baby x

In its special "Letters to Santa" section December 20, the Sheboygan Press wrote, "The Christmas dreams of children can be found in their letters to Santa claus. The Sheboygan Press helps to make those dreams come true by publishing their letters - just as they have written them..."

But, here is one letter you will not find anywhere in print. Isn't it about time someone helped these tiny dreamers get their messages to the Jolly Old Elf?

Dear Santa,

I'm still too little to write you, so I hope someone will help me. I am a good boy, though no one is paying much attention. But you can see me when I'm sleeping, and you know when I'm awake. So, you know I'm doing eveything I'm supposed to, right, Santa?

I don't want any toys. But could you please talk to my mom and ask her to carry me a little longer, just until I'm ready to come out into the light? That's all I want for Christmas, a chance to have my life.

Sorry, I can't get you milk and cookies, or treats for your reindeer. Maybe when I'm bigger. I love you, Santa. Hope to see you next year.

How "social justice" is bad for our health

Here is a cautionary thought from one of my favorite contemporary thinkers, Thomas Sowell:

...the worst that an insurance company can do is refuse to pay for medication or treatment. In some countries with government-run medical systems, the government can prevent you from spending your own money to get the medication or treatment that their bureaucracy has denied you. Your choice is to leave the country or smuggle in what you need.

However appalling such a situation may be, it is perfectly consistent with elites wanting to control your life. As far as those elites are concerned, it would not be "social justice" to allow some people to get medical care that others are denied, just because some people "happen to have money.

Isn't it ironic that Obama won the election on "hope," while his brand of health care will kill hope for many to get the quality, timely treatment they need?

Like meat or dairy? Look out.

Some of us are not meant to become vegetarians. And why should we have to? Even the sea foods that are touted as healthful alternatives to meat or cheese might not agree with everyone. Many have metabolisms or taste buds that regularly need meat or dairy products to make them feel good.

But look out: an anti-meat tyranny may soon be coming our way if the U.S. follows the tasteless example of the Brits. Just add up the "we know what's best for you" attitude of the Dems + Obama making carbon dioxide a "dangerous substance" via the EPA + animal methane being considered an evil "global warming" contributor, and you'll get a government food policy that makes the high protein products we enjoy and count on expensive and scarce.

Anyone who does not see this coming is not paying attention to the trends and the truth. So, get ready to fill your Piggly Wiggly cart with pricey fake burgers and brats, soybean icecream and stone soup because if the climate-change shysters get their way, beef, dairy products, chicken and pork will go the way of the dinosaurs.

Blizzard Allison Speaks Out

Blizzard Allison said in a brief interview today:

Open your eyes, you proud and foolish creatures, who think you can change the entire climate in this massive, complex system. Your puny brains simply cannot wrap around the vast reality from which I come.

You humans obsess about weather, your specialists broadcasting minute to minute fluctuations. "They put real news on hold to talk about the clouds in the sky...People want weather," noted one introspective media member.*

I think deep down your species knows that the weather is one of those maddening things that is bigger than you, which you cannot control. Your little governments might take away your rights and your money. But we storms can clog the cogs of your daily life, force you to take up the shovel, blower or plow, send the careless spinning into the ditch - and you can't vote us out!

Of course, a generous blizzard, such as myself, bestows upon many a welcome snow day pass from work and school, some unexpected family time, a pause from the daily grind. And that is the other side of my power.

This Thanksgiving, I want to take a break from my regular preoccupations to acknowledge the God-given gifts I often take for granted. Besides our dear families, and our Shining City upon the hill, we are blessed with many simple pleasures, such as the sense of taste (mmmm, pumpkin pie) and eyesight (catching striking sunsets behind leafless tree silhouettes.)

And then, there is our unique human ability for language and expression. I love language, the play of sound and meaning, the way you can share what you know or feel. I cannot imagine life without being able to string words together to echo our sense of the world. Of course, if we did not have the capacity for language, our thought patterns and behavior would be so different we would not even know what we were missing ~ But, we DO have language, and in gratitude for that miracle, here are a few words strung together that can inspire.

No "immune" defense = downfall of America

"If not the greatest evil, yet war is a great evil. Therefore, we should all like to remove it if we can. But every war leads to another war. The removal of war must therefore be attempted. We must increase by propaganda the number of Pacifists in each nation until it becomes great enough to deter that nation from going to war. This seems to me wild work. Only liberal societies tolerate Pacifists. In the liberal society, the number of Pacifists will either be large enough to cripple the state as a belligerent, or not. If not, you have done nothing. If it is large enough, then you have handed over the state which does tolerate Pacifists to its totalitarian neighbour who does not. Pacifism of this kind is taking the straight road to a world in which there will be no Pacifists."

Lewis logically concluded that accepting and promoting pacifism allows for the takeover by regimes that do not allow pacifism. This is the same as the acceptance of collectivist ideas by a society of free individuals, which can only lead to the crushing of that freedom. There are many metaphors that could be used to portray this reality, from the Trojan horse to a parasite feeding off of and ultimately killing its host. I prefer to put it in terms of damage to America's natural immunity.

Earlier in our history, Americans were educated about the great ideals of their country. In this age of relativism, the schools no longer teach American exceptionalism. But how did we get to this age of relativist thought? It advanced from the same radical ideas America has been fighting for decades!

From about 1900 to about 1930, our countrymen and women overwhelmingly resisted socialism and collectivist ideas seeping into America. The "First Red Scare" of 1917-1919 was evidence of America's immune system working to expel what was foreign and damaging. Liberal historians (which includes most historians, unfortunately) portray the resistance to collectivist ideas during that time as "hysteria." While Attorney General Palmer did go overboard in his deportations of accused radicals, there was justification for attempting to counter the ideas that threatened the great American ideas of individual freedom and a republican form of government.

In the 1940s and 1950s, the national cry turned against communism, bringing on the "Second Red Scare," which focused on finding radicals in government positions. The world was alive with communist activity, prompting a reasonable counter response in America. But again, liberal historians downplay and criticize the battle against communist ideas, though such a fight was actually a healthy "immune response." The most maligned representative of the era, Joe McCarthy, acted like a vicious hyped-up t-cell: He chose some of his targets accurately, but also attacked others, who were benign, giving anti-communism a bad name.

In the 1960s, a viral infection of anti-Americanism virtually collapsed the immune system of the nation. It allowed the parasite of Political Correctness to take root, an idea deadlier than the AIDS disease. The scourge has deadened America's capacity to identify that which will kill our freedom and way of life. Socialism, Communism and Islamo-fascism are now camouflaged by the malignant relativism - they are actually ignored or protected by our education system and the highest levels of our government.

A spiritual and mental pacifism mean defeat. A country that has lost its will and ability to identify and actively fight the pandemic of deadly ideas cannot survive.

Tom Barrett gets name recognition "boost" from NRA

Those who are worried that Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Tom Barrett is only known in the Milwaukee area where he is mayor can relax - depending on their stance on Second Amendment rights, that is. Barrett, who just announced his 2010 candidacy, is written up for his anti-gun policies in the December 2009 issue of America's 1st Freedom, flanked by similar critiques of MSNBC talk show host Rachel Maddow and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on page 18. (The online version is dated October 1.)

The Wisconsin Democrat's claim to National Rifle Association fame is his anti-gun proposals for Milwaukee, which the NRA says will "further erode city residents' Second Amendment rights." The article pointedly asserts Barrett exploited the fatal shootings of the two Milwaukee law enforcement officers in order to push his agenda.

Barrett's gun control views are typical for a liberal running a big city plagued by violent crime, despite statistics that show concealed carry lowers crime rates. The mayor has been described as being "100% anti gun" and accused of "waging a holy jihad against guns" by online critics. He has been active in Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG), a group that lobbied Congress against national reciprocity of right-to-carry permits, and for regulating gun shows and repealing privacy rights for gun owners. And even though Barrett himself was attacked and beaten with a metal pipe last August, which he is still recovering from, he does not support concealed carry in Wisconsin.

No doubt, a Governor Barrett would carry on the repressive legacy of Governor Jim Doyle, resisting concealed carry for self-defense. His provisions that take aim at gun owners in Milwaukee are also sure to follow him into the campaign season. And Tom Barrett's recent recognition by the NRA is certain to reach the eyes and ears of Wisconsin voters who value Second Amendment rights.

Ayn Rand: a beacon for our time

This country is engaged in an eternal struggle between individualism and collectivism. The words of one of my favorite philosophers, Ayn Rand, shine a clarifying light on the differences between these two very different approaches, which lead to results as opposite as night and day. Here are quotes from Rand's incandescent thoughts in her "Textbook of Americanism" published in The Vigil back in 1946.

Individualism holds that man has inalienable rights which cannot be taken away from him by any other man, nor by any number, group or collective of other men. Therefore, each man exists by his own right and for his own sake, not for the sake of the group.

Collectivism holds that man has no rights; that his work, his body and his personality belong to the group; that the group can do with him as it pleases, in any manner it pleases, for the sake of whatever it decides to be its own welfare. Therefore, each man exists only by the permission of the group and for the sake of the group.

In a society based on Individualism: The power of society is limited by the inalienable, individual rights of man. Society may make only such laws as do not violate these rights.

An individualist is a man who says: “I’ll not run anyone's life—nor let anyone run mine. I will not rule nor be ruled. I will not be a master nor a slave. I will not sacrifice myself to anyone—nor sacrifice anyone to myself.”

A collectivist is a man who says: “Let's get together, boys—and then anything goes!”

Do not be misled on this point by an old collectivist trick which goes like this: There is no absolute freedom anyway, since you are not free to murder; society limits your freedom when it does not permit you to kill; therefore, society holds the right to limit your freedom in any manner it sees fit; therefore, drop the delusion of freedom—freedom is whatever society decides it is.

It is not society, nor any social right, that forbids you to kill—but the inalienable individual right of another man to live. This is not a “compromise” between two rights—but a line of division that preserves both rights untouched. The division is not derived from an edict of society—but from your own inalienable individual right. The definition of this limit is not set arbitrarily by society—but is implicit in the definition of your own right.

The proper function of government is to protect the individual rights of man; this means to protect man against brute force.

The proper kind of government does not initiate the use of force. It uses force only to answer those who have initiated its use. For example when the government arrests a criminal, it is not the government that violates a right; it is the criminal who has violated a right and by doing so has placed himself outside the principle of rights, where men can have no recourse against him except through force.

When, however, a government becomes an initiator of force, the injustice and moral corruption involved are truly unspeakable.

For example: When a Collectivist government orders a man to work and attaches him to a job, under penalty of death or imprisonment, it is the government that initiates the use of force. The man has done no violence to anyone—but the government uses violence against him. There is no possible justification for such a procedure in theory. And there is no possible result in practice—except the blood and the terror which you can observe in any Collectivist country.

Collectivism goes a step below savage anarchy: it takes away from man even the chance to fight back. It makes violence legal—and resistance to it illegal. It gives the sanction of law to the organized brute force of a majority (or of anyone who claims to represent it)-and turns the minority into a helpless, disarmed object of extermination. If you can think of a more vicious perversion of justice—name it.

In actual practice, when a Collectivist society violates the rights of a minority (or of one single man), the result is that the majority loses its rights as well, and finds itself delivered into the total power of a small group that rules through sheer brute force.

With all the anti-bullying focus in the schools, you would think people would be more aware of identifying bullies in their lives. There is bully afoot most people do not think of as such. Here is a list of the damage bullies do, with examples of how the current U.S. government run by liberals fits the definition of a bully to a "t":

• Physical Aggression: harm to a person or a person’s property
Think: property rights, eminent domain, and the stealing of more and more money the people earn through taxation
• Social/Relational Aggression: harm to a person’s group acceptance
Think: spreading rumors about and trying to isolate and publicly humiliate talk show hosts, those who listen to them, and returning service men and women, and Americans who do not agree with them, AND high level businessmen who earn profits
• Intimidation: harm to a person through pressure or fear
Think: threatening to fine or jail people who do not sign up for health insurance, even though it is unconstitutional
• Verbal Aggression: harm to person through spoken words
Think: calling of everyday Americans who go to tea parties or criticize government potential terrorists
• Written Aggression: harm to a person through written words
Think: Bills that can control people against their will, like the latest version of the government health care insurance bill, which uses the commanding word, shall, 3,425 times, according to U.S. Representative Mike Pence.

We are going to have to work together to stop this big bully from bossing us around, stealing what belongs to our families, and trying to discredit us. Together, we can do it. Yes, we can.

Earlier this year, I experimented with taking "artsy" pictures of famous political personalities on our very old tv, which added noise "texture." For some reason, the least flattering shots taken during televised events and interviews were the most evocative, lending themselves to a bit of Halloween imagination.

Nice Try, Senator Feingold

Senator Russ Feingold should be commended for his recent letter to President Obama, calling for him to identify the roles of his numerous "czars" and "provide the judgment(s) of (his) legal advisors as to whether and how (the) positions are consistent with the Appointments Clause" in the Constitution. Many Americans have been uncomfortable with the 18 to 30 (depending on who you talk to) executive appointments the president has made of these policy advisors, who are not accountable to the voters or Congress in any way.

The move by Feingold to question the Constitutional correctness of the appointments was actually a pleasant surprise from a senator who trampled on 1st amendment rights in his McCain-Feingold legislation. The same senator is also espousing the federal take-over of 1/6 of the economy via health care insurance reform, which many believe is unconstitutional.

So, why would Senator Feingold suddenly care about the constitutionality of appointments made by a president he voted for? The answer is POWER, to protect the oversight power of his own legislative body - not a bad thing to do in a constitutional republic. Interestingly, the focus on the czars also comes at an opportune time to distract citizens from what is currently going on with the federal health care plan behind closed doors. Hmmm.

And speaking of closed doors, that is exactly how the White House responded to Feingold's Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution when invited to send a spokesperson to the hearing, Examining the History and Legality of Executive Branch Czars. Feingold is chair of the subcommitte and led the October 6th hearing, where participants expressed frustration over the lack of White House participation. (See webcast of testimonies at above site.)

The hearing was a model of bi-partisan cooperation for clarity, transparency and constitutionality. Ranking Member Tom Coburn, Republican senator from Oklahoma, said in his opening comments, "This is not a partisan issue." He complimented Senator Feingold for being "absolutely honest intellectually." Now, if only our Democratic senator would focus some of that honesty and respect for the Constitution on other issues the nation is facing.

At least, Feingold opened the door to understanding the definition and function of Obama's czars. Witness Tuan Samahon, Associate Professor at Villanova University School of Law, testified that czars, if defined as inferior officers, do not require oversight by the Senate, not having the legal authority to bind government or third parties. Another speaker, T.J. Halstead of the Library of Congress, asserted that Congress could use its power to summon the czars to testify if need be. Legislators could also restrict appropriations to offices of czars doing things they did not approve of, he said.

Despite such suggestions, a detailed picture of the influence of Obama's czars on executive policy was impossible to get without White House input. But nice try, Senator Feingold.

19th Civil War Weekend at Wade House: Sights and Sounds

This past Sunday, my husband, teens and I time-traveled back to the 1860s at the 19th Annual Civil War Weekend at the Wade House in Greenbush, Wisconsin. The Sheboygan Press reviewed the Saturday event, including photos. Sunday's event fell on a warm but windy day that whipped the canvas entertainment and vendor tents as the re-enactors and their children (such as in the picture) went about their 19th Century business.

A stern President Lincoln (Fritz Klein of Springfield, Ill.) and a passionate southern senator, Erasmus Wilcox (Michael Douglass), exchanged heated words about the national conflict every half-hour near the entry gate.

The fortune-teller did not seem concerned about politics or war as she conjured advice on love and money.

The 1860s re-enactors strolled through the encampments and vendor area, improvising.

Goods and wares were plentiful, from hoop skirts and uniforms to trinkets, toys, kettlecorn and fresh pickles. Civil War books were also available, including the children's book, B is for Battle Cry, by Wisconsin born author Patricia Bauer, who read from her book.

A shotgun wedding was re-enacted in one camp to save a young woman's honor. The soldier could have gotten 25 years in prison for his dallying.

The nondemoninational Sunday service welcomed people from the blue, the grey, and the 21st Century.

Following church, the Regimental Volunteer Band of Wisconsin from Whitewater gave a concert on original instruments of the day.

One selection was Lulu is Gone, a piece borrowed from the 26th North Carolina Band.

Wonder why the bells of some of these old brass instruments point backwards? The band's tenor horn player (upper photo, brown hat) gave the explanation just as some Confederate soldiers came marching by: perfect timing.

A lone woman on horseback stared steadfastly towards the distant hill of the battle, as if awaiting news of husband, son or brother.

Hundreds of observers packed the viewing site at the top of the battlefield, and the skirmish began.

After the battle, nurses worked on the wounded in the Medical Area, while back in town, the 1860s Traveling 'Medicine' Show advertised its 'cures' in a lively tent meeting. The Mockingbird Theatre Company of Dayton, Ohio, gave a convincing performance to a crowd that burst out of the seams of the tent to sit and stand on the grass.

Say what you will about the "snake oil" show, the Civil War Weekend was "good medicine" for visitors to experience a piece of our past on one of the last warmish days of the season.

1919 America Resisted Radicalism, Why Can't We?

This three-part ad from a 1919 magazine caught my eye. It portrays support for the American way of life through a strong military, contrasting with the chaos of radical movements' attempts to disrupt the roots of the nation.

Roosevelt's "big stick" kind of message called for "every decent citizen" to fight radical uprisings to preserve "the institutions and laws established by our founders" - unlike today, where the government is dominated by radical views, and defenders of the limited government of our founders are called potential terrorists.

Teddy Roosevelt's last paragraph gives advice on how to build unity, and it is not about redistributing individuals' resources, or class envy.

...I think that I am in sympathy with the average American when I say that there must be no class parties. We want no capitalist party, no labor party and no feminist party. What we want are political parties in which men and women of any class or position shake hands and work together for ideals and principles.

Sounds like a good idea for any era.

"You Brought It Upon Yourself, You Knucklehead"

This bystander's quote says it all, regarding the incident at the Milwaukee Tea Party yesterday. We did not get to the event, but this video does not show a violent mob, but a man, who appears to be trying to pick a fight. Notice, too, that the police only arrest one person, the guy who one liberal blogger said was the victim of the so-called mob.

In response to that lefty blogger's ever so thoughtful questions (at bottom of her post) resulting from her foggy-minded Facebook account of the incident, here are questions from another perspective:

Are lefty perceptions dangerous?

Do you think there's any connection between goading behavior of arrested man and finger-pointing blogger and a wish to see their opposition silenced?

At what point will most Americans see for themselves (videos don't lie) how the left bends the truth about everyday people and their views?

Leibham Fights Phone Tax Deception

Shame on Governor Doyle for trying to hide the evidence of his tax-greedy, irresponsible budget behind the good reputation of our police and fire departments. Starting this month, our active wireless, land-based or VOIP phone bills will show a "Police and Fire Protection Fee." Prepaid wireless telephone users will also pay the new 75 cents/month tax.

Senator Joe Leibham called this situation a "deceptive move" in his latest Capitol Connection. The senator focused on getting answers about the confusing new fee for his constituents, including several local police and fire chiefs, who wondered if the tax would provide new funding for their agencies.

Leibham reported the revenues of the new tax, an estimated $46.4 million in 2009-10 and $61.2 million in 2010-11, will not change anything for police and fire departments. Rather, the money will replace General Purpose Revenue that currently funds our public protection services, leaving the GPR to fund other parts of the state budget.

Wow, what a win-win-win situation: the public can feel good about supporting their local police and fire; the local police and fire can feel good about what looks like extra funding; taxpayers can feel good believing their taxes are not going up; and Doyle and the Democratic legislators can feel good having more to spend, spend, spend.

Senator Leibham does not feel good about the deception, however. "It was wrong for the legislature to include this misleading provision in the budget," he wrote.

Cellular phone users will also start to pay a state Consumer Complaint and Universal Service Fund assessments - 56 cents/month - on top of the bogus Police and Fire Protection Fee, according to the senator. He revealed these additional assessments will be hidden in consumers' bills, thanks to Doyle and the majority in the legislature.

Luckily, Leibham is standing up against what he calls a "sneaky provision." He has authored legislation to require "each and every tax or fee assessed to your utility (phone, gas, cable) to be clearly identified and described on a separate line on your bill." He insisted, "If the government is going to assess you with a new tax or fee, they should at least have the courage to inform you of their decision."

The 9th district - and the state of Wisconsin - are fortunate to have such a fighter for government honesty, openness and accountability as Senator Joe Leibham.

The President NEVER Lies

(here is the proof) so don't even think it, much less say it in the U.S. House of Representatives. The same goes for sexual misconduct, hypocrisy, cowardice, intellectual dishonesty, and giving aid and comfort to the enemy - all protected presidential behavior in the Big House, where no one can say a word about it.

For our House of Representatives still follows the antiquated, eagerly updated Jefferson’s Manual, which prohibited Parliament Members from "speak{ing} irreverently or seditiously against the King," now interpreted to squelch personal references against the President. With the men and women who speak for us silenced, wonder who will be next.

Joe Wilson might have yelled out to the President, "you half-baked nitwit, your speech is a disgrace to the country" (allowed language) instead of those two, succinct and powerful words he continues to be whipped for uttering. Or he could have said, with all due respect, Mr. President, you are not telling the truth. (a word not yet banned) Here are other words Rep. Wilson could have used (from the Thesaurus):

Next March: On Major Media's Doorstep!

Rush Limbaugh just called for the next protest to be in NYC at the corporate doorsteps of the major media who refused to cover the Washington D.C. march last week. This morning, I heard Vicki McKenna call the sock-puppet media "the enemy" because it is truly getting dangerous the way they refuse to cover what is actually going on - dangerous to freedom, and a threat to the peaceful nature of these protests. (Just takes one kook to ruin it for everyone.)

Here are my media-related activist ideas to add to our repertoire:

First, everyone who attended the Washington D.C. march last week write up the event and your experience, and report on it in a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. If you paper accepts photos of what people are doing, send some.

Second, let's continue to schedule and attend every march, tea party, and town hall meeting we can, and make sure to DOCUMENT it with photos, video, etc. At least, in a few years, we'll have an interesting photo album to share with our grandchildren if our efforts to save the country worked.

Third, time to start a NEW Snailmail Campaign and send a message to the mainstream, out-of-touch media. How about mailing pens or photocopies of pens, or tea bags or something else (keep it clean, even though it's tempting...) to the sock-puppet media that selectively omits our local and national events. Include a message like "do your job" or "the pen is mightier than the sword, use it for truth" or something.

Any other ideas?

Phil Zimmermann Speech from Sheboygan Tea Party On Health Care

I had a request from Irate, Tireless Minority to share my recording of the entire speech Dr. Phil Zimmermann gave September 5 at the Sheboygan Tea Party. I did not find another complete video or audio recording of the UW-Madison resident physician's health care speech online, so am happy to post it. His website has a printed text that is similar, but not exactly the whole speech he gave.

Zimmermann's participation in the tea party has been criticized by some. Foxtrot-Echocalled for Americans for Prosperity to apologize for including a man who is apparently a 9-11 "truther." (Note that Zimmermann politely responded at his critic's site.)

Others like Zimmerman's positions. A couple Sheboygan people who attended the event told me they enjoyed his speech. And I've been getting hits from a state rights site that praises his call for Wisconsin to secede from the Union at his website. A general discontent with big government is something many of us share, even if we do not go that far.

Still, the doctor's anti-big business, and isolationist views felt out of place at the tax protest event. I thought tea party planners supported business, along with the defense of our nation's safety and security as designated by the U.S. Constitution, which would involve having a strong national military, in my opinion.

Besides, some of Dr. Zimmermann's views were simply hard to reconcile; for example, he spoke in favor of "voluntary" Socialism on one hand, and free markets on the other. Yet, despite an odd mix of beliefs, the doctor did make points against federal health care and government intrusion the crowd applauded.
